“BLACKOUT” IGNITION — LIGHT SWITCH REPLACEMENT
The first Indian Motocycles to be supplied with “Blackout” lighting equipment installed at the factory were 1940 Model 640-B bearing Indian engine numbers FD0-1015-1017 to FD0-1515 and FD0-2310 to FD0-2636 inclusive, serial numbers 640-1015-1017 to 640-1515 and 640-2310 to 640-2636 inclusive. These machines were equipped with “Mico” ignition — light switches operated solely with a key and safety button.
Later machines Model 640-B bearing Indian engine numbers from FD0-2637 to FDO- 3852 inclusive and serial numbers from 640-2637 to 640-3852 inclusive, were equipped with “Delco Remy” switches which operated with a key for ignition only, and with a hand lever and safety button for the lights.
The latest machines – Model 640-B, starting with Indian motor number FD0-3853, are equipped with an H-D type switch the same as the one now being supplied as a replacement unit for all motorcycles in the field which are equipped with “Blackout” lighting equipment. This switch has a winged knob for operating both ignition and lights, together with a safety button for service lights. The switch includes a lock and key to permit locking, as desired when machine is not in use. This lock uses the standard Army key Code H-700. When switch is unlocked and motorcycle in use, key should be removed from lock. This H-D type switch only is now supplied for replacement use.
Switch Positions:-
Turn left ( counterclockwise ) all the way for “OFF”. (This is the only position in which switch can be locked. ) |
Turn to first right position ( clockwise ) for ignition only. |
Turn to second right position ( clockwise ) for ignition and “blackout lights.” |
Press safety button and turn to third right position ( clockwise ) for ignition and service lights. |
Replacement switch kit for replacing all “Mico” switches, as previously described, consists of the following parts: –
- One complete H_D type switch, Part #76170.
- Four switch mounting spacers 5/32 long, Part #37688.
- Four switch mounting screws #8-32 x 3/8 long.
- Four #8 lock washers.
- One sub-mounting plate complete with brackets, Part #44202.
- One rubber grommet for instrument panel hole, Part #44201.
- Three switch terminal screws #6-32 x 1/4 long, Part #A-6020.
- Three terminal screw lock washers #6, Part #19B110.
Replacement switch kit for replacing all “Delco Remy” switches will contain the same parts as above except the rubber grommet, Item 6, which is not included due to the fact that hole in this instrument panel is the correct size for the new switch.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Study the wiring diagrams for both the old switch being replaced and the new one being installed, taking care to select the proper diagram for the switch being removed. Note that while the switches differ in respect to the actual location of the terminals about the switch, all wires going to each terminal remain the same.
REPLACING “MIC0” SWITCH
Remove instrument panel cover; disconnect all wires to switch and ammeter; remove instrument sub-mounting plate with switch and ammeter attached; remove ammeter from sub-mounting plate and reassemble on new sub-mounting plate, Item 5, taking particular care to see that insulating washers are assembled correctly; assemble new switch, Item 1, to this plate (place switch on panel with safety button toward front of machine) with screws, Item 3, and spacers, Item 2, (assemble spacers between switch mounting feet and sub-panel); replace wire between ammeter and switch; remove terminal screws from old switch and use in new switch when reassembling wires; connect all wires to the switch according to the wiring diagram, arranging them to prevent any interference. If wires appear too short, it may be necessary to pull up some of the slack from between the tanks. Rubber grommet, Item 6, is furnished to reduce the size of opening in the instrument panel cover to fit the new H-D switch. Insert grommet in panel opening – – making sure that groove is firmly seated. Operate all positions of switch and check results. Assemble instrument panel cover and check to avoid shorting or pinching of wires.
REPLACING “DELCO-REMY” SWITCH
The proper procedure for assembling this unit is exactly the same as for the “Mico” unit except that the rubber grommet, Item 6, is not used.
The foregoing replacement instructions apply only when an older type “Blackout” switch ( “Mico” or “Delco”) is replaced with a new H-D type switch.
